To be honest today was actually really really good as a Fun Friday day, and in my opinion, it was better than the other Wet Fun Friday's we've had so far. I think the difference is that all the kids actually got to do what they wanted to do even if it was just having one room for board games and card playing and the gym for free play. In the beginning of the gym time, Moussa and Pete (and Andrew as well) worked really hard doing a TON of organized games with the kids to keep them engaged. Although after a while the kids started to get tired and bored, Moussa, Pete and Andrew still allowed them to have their time playing all the games they wanted to play which I think is very important (having the kids feel as if their "wants" are being met as well as their "needs").
I do want to touch base on exactly what is expected of us for Fun Friday because I would like to admit that it is a bit of confusion every friday.
Are there lessons to be done in the room, still? I got the impression that Fun Friday was the one day out the week where the kid's day doesn't look so planned or structured for them (even though it really is). I know at one point we discussed having each room transformed into a different activity room where the kids can choose where they would like to go and have the freedom to move about as they please. I feel like every single day is planned for them and they never really get to do what they want to do, even in the gym. Yes they get free time for the remaining 30 minutes, but thats all. Fun Friday, in my opinion, is supposed to be their Freedom day. A computer room, an arts and craft room (not just drawing, but crochet/knitting/decorating hats/tie dye T-shirts/etc...) a movie room, a game room, and the gym).
Regardless, I think these kids have an awesome time even in the classroom doing lessons and activties, which convinces me that we are doing a GREAT job engaging these participants as well as excercising their noggin's.
